EU UNITED
Fixing the disconnect between European policy and economic reality.
About the project
EU United is a strategic initiative to establish a new European economic society — a permanent, independent body dedicated to improving the quality of economic thinking in public policy. The motivation is clear: many European policies are misaligned with basic economic principles. Price signals are distorted, competition is constrained, and innovation is often addressed through politically driven programs that ignore how value is actually created.
This misalignment is not accidental. It stems from three systemic issues. 1) Excessive lobbying and regulatory capture. 2) Lack of economic expertise in key policymaking roles. 3) Institutional conflicts of interest undermining objectivity. The result is a growing gap between policy goals and policy outcomes — particularly in areas central to Europe’s economic future, such as innovation, productivity, capital markets, and industrial competitiveness.
EU United is a working group formed to address this problem in a focused and structured way. Our mandate is to prepare the foundation for a permanent society that can operate independently and credibly over the long term.
The project has three core objectives:
- Define the society. Clarify the society’s mission, governance, membership model, and founding values — with an emphasis on competence, independence, and impact.
- Set the economic agenda. Identify the most urgent thematic areas where sound economics is missing from current policy — and outline a framework for structured research and recommendations.
- Design the operating model. Develop the processes, resources, and long-term plan needed to ensure institutional viability and strategic relevance.
